Deeply entrenched in the ambitious production work of Italian producer Mystics is an aching sense of the forlorn. On his debut for Bank, “Absent Heart Raze”, a floating cough syrup laced voice haunts broken beats and pummeling breaks over the course of six emotionally engaged listens. Often with maximalist makers, the perspective of the producer can get lost in the olympic techniques of the day. Here Mystics pushes past those egoistic constraints to balance an emotive underpinning amidst a rich palette of blown drums, glitched gestures, and crisp jungle breaks. “Absent Heart Raze” is a concise output, but does not lack in density and depth. Mystics contemporary vocabulary does not burden the listener, each track leaving the listener hungry for both another listen and an eagerness to consume the next chapter in this EP. “Absent Heart Raze” sits as comfortably in a dim smoke-filled bedroom as it does on a sound system, allowing one to get lost in the absent hearted realm of Mystics mind.
